This really concerns the finer nuances of a word and therefore is of little concern to non-native English speakers. I have a a stock of phrases to completely confuse foreigners about the state of British brains. This one even had the English foxed at the Hove AGM, but not a Welshman at Birmingham: "In Bristol they call them Cardiffs".
