My guess is computer C is the one with XP Pro? The Pro variant is
configured for corporations and therefore much more security aware.
The Home machines talk to each other using an anonymous "Guest" user
account. XP Pro, being more secure, doesn't just allow any anonymous
guest to access its files.
No, it has XP Home SP3. (Supplied pre-installed by Asus)
Problem seems to have been with the Orange setup CD which does not run
properly on Service Pack 3. I followed instructions for setting it up
manually in the end and it works now.

Still not got printing working, but I spotted something on HP's website
about networking the printer with the driver installed. There is a more
recent driver whichis downloading 309MB as I write.
