I have recently put together a Local Area Connection of 3 PC's through a Netgear router, which has both wireless and ethernet cable.

This means that I have 2 connections active at the same time on some of the machines !

The wireless is not reliable, whereas the ethernet cable is very reliable.

For the wireless a card has to be installed on each machine. In my case I have installed two wi-fi cards, a PCI one on the main PC and a plug in one on a portable PC.
2 of my PCs have wireless built in (A and C). B has a USB Zoom adapter which is the least user friendly of the 3, but it either works well or not at all.

The file transfer issue is solved (see other email), now printing is the issue. That 300+MB file is still downloading from HP at about 1 bit per day it seems. Sharing is deinitely applied to everything and firewalls suitable set to allow sharing. It does seem to be a driver isue as there is an obscure referemce to driver issues on HP's website.

It may just be for you that the wireless link is not always being successful.
That's certainly the case - the Orange broadband is troublesome 4pm-6pm when kids come home from school and swamp the network locally.

As well make any folders, as shared - these can be any folders that you like, not just SharedDocs - that you wish as being shared folders.
SharedDocs and printing were all I wanted.

You also have to set up the printer as being a shared one, so that any computer can access it. In effect it is like a separate driver that is set up.
Done.

As far a different versions of Windows is concerned, you should be able to using any version from WIN98SE onwards on the network.

I have called my home network "mchome".

The default is "mshome".
Well, as 2 were already called WORKGROUP I simply chnaged the MSHOME default of computer C and it was spotted straight away, but that was far as it would go originally. Seems to work now when I did it myself instead of relying on the Orange CD.

Anyway, enough Windoze here for now...:-(
