Hi Malcolm and Dilwyn
I have been running 3 computers with XP, XP Professional, and Vista OS
using a Netgear router, all sharing the same broadband connection, and 2
printers. The first computer is wired to the router, and others use
wireless. The printers are conected to two different computers but all are
shared and can be accessed from all other computers provided their
computer is switched on

Excellent talk through all the time

My next move is to access one computer from another - a program called -
LogMeIn - has been suggested. Any other thought?

John Mason

Good luck with this, John. I haven't gone down this path with mine as yet,
although I've got the file sharing sorted and working between all 3 now,
having found that the Orange setup CD didn't like Win XP SP3.

I'm still trying to find a driver for the HP PSC 1510 printer which allows
networking. The 309MB one I downloaded yesterday (working through HP's
Update Assistant) fails to even install on this machine, never mind print or
network at all. Setting the printer to 'Share' gives all the indication of
working, but gives up with a "bad handle" error.

I also want to experiment further with Remote Assistance when I get time. My
son and I did manage to get his Vista laptop and my XP machine to talk,
though it didn't work first time and we forgot to write down how we did it.
I seem to remember I had to enable a port in the Firewall settings, but we
did get it to work. I just hope I remember how next time he wants help!

I seem to remember we were both controlling each other's computer remotely
at one point, even having an audio conversation over the link, though I
can't remember if this was all part of Remote Assistance or not.

I originally wanted to familiarise with Remote Assistance so that Quanta
members using the helpline could ask me to connect to their systems to see
if I could help with QL emulator problems, but I was told at the time that
the necessary changes ot security settings (enabling the right port number,
etc) basically meant that if users knew enough about computers to achieve
Remote Assistance connection, they were unlikely to need help with QL
emulators!

When I'm ready to take this next step of accessing one computer from another
I'll come to you for expert advice in a few weeks John... How's that?
