Although I moan about Windoze, it's fulfilled my needs reasonably well

I'll agree with that. Windows 7 is stable and very usable, if I have
to! It came on my laptop and I think, might still be there, somewhere!
I know I used it a long time back for something, and I was seriously
impressed. And you can quote me! ;-)
As for learning Linux "to please Norman" - I wouldn't bother for that
reason. Do it, like everything else, because you want to! It's better
than way. :-)
Cheers,
Norm.
My son has just visited us. He has for some time been a Linux fan and
uses Suse Enterprise, I think, which is maintained for professional use;
but disappointingly that is changing, He says that many versions are
going the popular way with smartphone/tablet type displays, and not
supporting the old. He feels that it is being really messed up for the
professional/industrial user, and is seeking a way forward. He couldn't
at present suggest a version which would serve me for the next five or
ten years without my having to learn new tricks, which I don't want to
do at my advanced age - 87. A dedicated version is needed for the older
generation. At least I can still have my QL, but not for online use.
