You are correct. The interface plugs into the coprocessor socket rather than the rom socket.

I just took a look at my Di-ren kbd if. It is plugged into the rom socket (I think). It has a Hermes chip plugged into it. It does have a crystal and several capacitor on top. I did not unplug it, but it looks like it is single side through the board construction. I do not remember if the Hermes is required or if the original rom will work.

Hi Lafe,
Since the Hermes is a direct 8049 replacement (I believe you meant 8049 instead of ROM right?) that's no surprise here. It should work with any 8049... What I found rather impossible from the picture I saw is for it to work without some kind of logic chip and that's what my original question was geared towards...
