Would the problem be that the Unix box was running >something like KDE? We are talking about the GUI side of things of course so yes... process handling under text mode is A LOT better than under X, however QDOS beats both systems hands down... and if you talk in comparable processing power terms (ie a 68060 with a 386/slow 486)... then it's lightyears ahead! >I would be surprised if you could not build a version of Linux on a modern >PC Box running the equivalent of the software installation on the Q60 which >could not operate orders of magnitude faster than a Q60. > Of course you can, (apart from the booting process which in MOST cases is a lot slower on the PC for other reasons), however that's not the point of having Linux under Qx0. One of the greatest advantages (apart from offering to QDOS users features not available to them using traditional QL hardware) is that it can sell as a VERY low power consuming Web Server.... and be VERY successful commercially... A run of the mill Web Hosting Service usually stacks Pentiums or other power hungry servers which result in IMMENSE amounts of power being consumed, heat generated and thus extra power (and monetary) requirements to cool these down, plus the costs of Fans replaced, noise suppression and the people that need to service them constantly... A Qx0 web server farm of 100 machines would practically consume as much energy as 5 medium sized PC servers and generate approximately the same heat.... You can see the obvious advantages :-) > >
