Hi Pheobus,

You must be installing Shoestring, it is quite hard to install. I have had a
few failures with it.  The enter runlevel means that the system does not
know which runlevel to use, 3 is a good one. But the installation has failed

But I installed it on a Q40 at a Computer show, and it did install first
time.

There seems to be problems with the type of CDR disk used, maybe it is
errors in the writing of the disk, try looking at the checksums of the
downloaded disk image.
