Thing is, I cannot see why a new SMSQ/E version should increase the need for a reduced cable length. Especially as basically no SMSQ/E code is involved in accessing the drive.
The problem exists since 2.98 (when the init code changed). I just never got around to figuring it out as I was still using 2.91
