Not as way out as you think (8-)#
I did buy a few IBM golfball typewriters - the ones used as computer
terminals, and converted them to printers.
I used an 8-bit PIO from my UK101 to drive it direct.
bit 7 was used to switch between characters and functions.
When on functions, the remaining 7 bits each operated CR, LF, shift and
so on. I even wired the status switches in series back into the
computer, so that the next character could be sent immediately -
'handshake' of course.
That was a really enjoyable project, but the Diablo 630 took over - soon
to be my first QL printer.
... and I only have 7 sheds I'll have you know.
