Because we need a gateway for the show. AOL is the only one that can provide us with 1-800 (toll free) numbers around the US, plus it comes with 1000 hours free for the tryout. I figured, we will give it a go for the show (and it comes right out after that).
For my Q40 to work as a gateway via Qx0 Linux, I will have to either have a long distance connection (not very pleasing with the costs of long-distance calls from hotels) or via my mobile phone as a data call (again not free and also not sure that it will work depending on the availability of a GSM network in the vicinity - which has to be as T-Mobile USA is based in Florida but then again you never know). In any case the AOL connection would be a backup.... Trust me I dislike it even more that the next AOL-hater but we really don't have many options. -Unless of course the hotel DOES have WiFi -or there's an unprotected one in the vicinity ;-)
As for the XP, it's for the other users. I wasn't planning on bringing a PC with me originally but it has to do with the networking of other users ;-) I do have a throwaway PC that's fast enough and runs XP (it's for the daughter actually) so no AOL harm would actually have an impact... whereas to other notebook holders (see Jochen, Roy, Tony, Marcel etc) this would be their machine's doom :-P
