Bad installation is very unlikely. Unlike older Windows, XP either works or not. Problems with XP stem from bad programs installed AFTER the XP setup is completed -or faulty hardware of course-. From what Arnould described, my guess is that he has just many things running probably from installations, trojans or spyware programs. Again, nothing to do with the actual Windows XP installation.
Truth is that Windows sucks but not EVERYTHING is its fault. (It is by association since if it had a half decent security most of these things wouldn't be possible but anyway...).
