IMHO you used 9 lines of text to say the same as me in 1 line. Why the hell should I, user x, bother with installation of something like XP? When you use your car, your TV set or your washing machine, do you fine tune the settings every other day?
This is not a car or a washing machine it is a computer and it needs some attention to detail if it is to run correctly. To be honest even the car and washing machine need attention so don't expect it to run properly if you don't do it. If I do not put oil in the car and look at it if it misbehaves or makes odd noises I cannot complain if it breaks down.

I beg to differ when it comes to Wintel machines. The whole point of having something like Windows XP is to make the machine behave and use like a toaster/washer etc. Granted it still have some ways to go but it's definitely what is attempted. For any NORMAL user (ie use the machine as a convenience device ie send/receive email, get news from a News Service (hi Tony!) print recipes and play music, games and your occasional DVD) NO configuration is -or at least should be according to what Windows XP is aimed at- necessary apart of regular TLC (keep it clean and connect it to power... same as the minimal care a consumer device would need ie. almost none). Usually, if the user sticks with what is preinstalled and doesn't install anything more than he/she needs any machine (Windows included) will never give any trouble barring a hardware failure.

See for example Windows XP Media Edition. What sort of configuration is needed on one? :-).
The point is (and to bring the whole thing back on topic) -and to preserve the washing machine analogy- is that you will not dismantle the washing machine to see how it works (and neither you should Windows). For that (and for hobby computing in general) the QL side of things (QPC, uQLx, QemuLator or a real QL/Qx0 for that matter) is the way to go. This is the whole point of us sticking with QL-based OSes isn't it?
