Hi Carsten,

noo, that isn't the night design :). I used
http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi
to verify.

But as I got your attention, now, I would like to tell you a few hints
on how to optimize the OSM maps as they are a real PITA for drawing and
to look at.

* The basemap is really bad. Isn't there a possibility to draw at least
country borders and major highways?

* Tile size. Why so many small tiles? That is one part of the mess in
the basemap. And it's a real performance hit to render. I really
recommend to have a look at City Navigator on how to tile the world in a
sane way. There is no problem to handle files with 10 - 20 MB. But I
have to do overhead for each file. Thus many small files are worse than
big ones.

* Spend more zoom levels in the basemap. Only one is sparse and for the
outer zoom levels the basemap is enough. Right now I have to parse a
huge amount of files for outer zoom levels. Look, these are the zoom
levels for City Navigator Europe V8:

Bits Level useBaseMap

Basemap
13 4 true
15 3 true
17 2 true

Tiles
19 2 false
21 1 false
23 0 false

And these are the ones for OSM Europe:

Basemap
13 6 true

Tiles
16 4 false
18 3 false
20 2 false
22 1 false
24 0 false

* Another huge performance hit are staircase lines in the outer zoom
levels. I have to re-project every polyline point. That is expensive. If
the highway does not change the average direction it can be interpolated
by a line. No one expects GPS accuracy on that level. It's just for
overview.

* Also highways seem to have all their ramps up to the outer zoom
levels. That does not add any information. But eats up resources.

* Every minor water body seems to be drawn in the outer zoom levels.
That does not add information either. Big lakes and major streams are
enough.

* Tiles must not overlap. Tile selection is really bad if they do.

* Use POIS for city names instead of points and add more on every zoom
level. Users will be grateful.

Ok list is long enough for now. :)

Oliver
