Thank you for clarifying Roman, so we could summarize the situation like
the following:

Roman maintains two Ubuntu repositories for QLandkarteGT at the same time,
one of them which contains QLGT linked to (and dependant on) GDAL 1.6.0 (as
included by default in Ubuntu Natty 11.04), and another different one
linked to (and dependant on) GDAL 1.8.0, with GDAL 1.8.0 packages available
at the following UbuntuGIS PPA:
        https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ubuntugis-unstable

So, if you want QLGT linked to GDAL 1.8.0 installed, add the following two
repositories to your Ubuntu installation:
        https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ubuntugis-unstable (GDAL)
        https://launchpad.net/~mms-prodeia/+archive/qlandkarte (QLGT)

On the other hand, should you like to install QLGT linked to GDAL 1.6.0,
just add the following PPA to your Ubuntu configuration:
        https://launchpad.net/~mms-prodeia/+archive/ppa

Do an "apt-get update ; apt-get install qlandkartegt", and that's it. QLGT
linked to GDAL 1.8.0 has several improvements over the other version,
mostly related to GDAL's support of remote WMS/TMS servers. Try both and
use whichever it fits you best. If you use the GDAL 1.6.0 based version and
try to access some remote maps, you'll get information on the console (if
QLGT started from the command line) telling you so. For example:
ERROR 1: GDALWMS: No mini-driver registered for 'TMS'.

I have tried the instructions above, and seem to work in my own setup. Hope
this summary helps other people, even outside this list, as Google is quite
efficient at locating pertinent information when doing searches :-)

Greetings,
