QLGT linked to GDAL 1.8.0 has several improvements over the other version, mostly related to GDAL's support of remote WMS/TMS servers. Try both and use whichever it fits you best. If you use the GDAL 1.6.0 based version and try to access some remote maps, you'll get information on the console (if QLGT started from the command line) telling you so. For example: ERROR 1: GDALWMS: No mini-driver registered for 'TMS'. I have tried the instructions above, and seem to work in my own setup.
