Just one remark from my side:

The packages linked against GDAL 1.8 are always a higher version number, than 
the ones linked against GDAL 1.6. With that, changing from GDAL 1.6 to 1.8 is 
an "update" and the other way round a "downgrade".

This way, adding the GDAL 1.8 repos, QLGT automagically gets upgraded with 
system update, too ...
