AFAIK Ubuntu offers software updates only with the official releases (LTS every 2 years, Standard every 6 months) This doesn't apply for security updates and other bug fixes as well as hardware support improvements.
If you want to be up-to-date self compiling is necessary anymore. May be that other distributions are quickier.
