We have such users. They use pine and mutt with Maildir support on the
same machine. I'm a great fan of backwards compatibility but as
elsewhere, there is a price ...
The ex elm users are happy with pine ;-)
The mail sorters use mutt, Win pop3 clients that can sort, and the
advanced ones use the qmail+Russell Nelson multi-account-in-account
stuff to sort mail at that level.
