My mistake.  I only meant to emphasize that it did not rely on IMAP like
SquirrelMail does

You are mistaken, sqwebmail doesnt support POP3
Furthermore it only supports Maildir directories. Which would be 
irrelevant if it was supporting POP3 anyway.
