Sounds like you need to put together one of : (a) another machine (b) a Xen virtual machine (c) a VMWare virtual machine (I recommend this one)
with the same qmt configuration as your production machine and try the upgrades there first. As the vmware player is free (as in beer) from http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ and there is a qmt appliance available, you might want to go that route. That way you discover the problems before you upgrade and will be ready to cope with them easily on the production server.
