Ok, I tried this, and it the number of tmp dirs is still increasing. I'll let
it run like this for awhile to see if it improves.

Oh, that is a great tip! I've added SIMSCAN_DEBUG="3" to tcp.smtp. With the
wrapper script still disabled, the debug output is, e.g.:
