Hi,
yesterday morning I've installed the updated dovecot and since then there
was no problem with the client login.
Problem seems gone .
Thank you all for the great support.

Fabio,
Okay, it's patched.
The new file is dovecot-2.3.11.3-13 in the testing repo with all the
associated packages. We cannot, from here, go on to 2.3.13 because that
version no longer supports vpopmail driver.
command will be this:
# yum --enablerepo=qmt-testing update dovecot
I'd wait maybe a day at which time all the qt repos are updated,
or you will find the file on my site at this link:
http://repo.whitehorsetc.com/7/testing/x86_64/
from which you can download it and install manually.
Eventually, we will all go this route:
https://www.qmailtoaster.org/manydom.html
and all dnf (yum) settings can be modified so that all rpms will come from
dovecot.

Hi Eric,
I have already searched the dovecot mailing list and found a few people who
complain about this error exclusively with dovecot version 2.3.11.3
It seems a bug has been introduced on the behavior of the AUTH mechanism.
On the mailing list they recommend patching the sources or upgrading to a
later version. That's why I was asking how to upgrade.

hmmm...
pretty much the same I have on my toaster.
This is what is confusing:
"-ERR [AUTH] Unsupported authentication method" and " method=USER"
I've seen failures with 'method=digest-md5' or 'method=cram-md5' but never
user.
Can you ask about this on the Dovecot mailing list and let us know what
they say?

The dovecot version we (qt) compile has the vpopmail driver in it, the
dovecot repos don't have that driver compiled in. If you use the many
domain version of qmail toaster that it would be okay, but using the stock
version then, no, you would run into trouble using the dovecot repo versions.

I've found this on the dovecot mailing list :

Hi everyone,
I have been having a weird problem connecting pop 3 to my corporate server
from Outlook and Thunderbird for about two weeks.
When the client tries to connect to the server, I got this error message
"-ERR [AUTH] Unsupported authentication method" and in the Dovecot logs I
found errors like "pop3-login: Info: Disconnected (tried to use unsupported
auth mechanism): user=<x...@xxxxxx.it>, method=USER, rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,
lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, TLS, session=<bXG42jTVxNtc3/SS>
" .
The strange thing is that the same client checks multiple boxes on the same
domain and not all of them give an error, also the error occurs randomly,
maybe for half a day it is impossible to download the mail and then
suddenly it works for a couple of hours.
Using the imap protocol there are no problems.
When the clients manage to connect I find this in the Dovecot logs
"pop3-login: Info: Login: user=<x...@xxxxxx.it>, method=DIGEST-MD5,
rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, mpid=5510, TLS,
session=<+0htGDnVWPdc3/SS>", I don't know why on the same client without
changing anything the method switch from USER to DIGEST-MD5
The server is up to date, dovecot version is 2.3.11.3
Any suggestions are welcome
