The question is how they should behave. I currently have not found a single editable combobox in windows which has some useful type of keyboard interaction other than focusing the text field. If you give us examples of how it should behave I am more than comfortable to add this behavior to qooxdoo. Still keep in mind the the often more used variant to select data, the selectbox, is completely controlable using the keyboard.
