You would expect the the down-key the dropdown the list and the
down-up key to select entries on the list.
But focussing and editing are the most important ones.

It seems I was jumping to conclusions here, not having tried the
combobox in the .8 series..
If you can focus it, and edit it using the keyboard, that sounds fine to me.
