  I'd like an authoritative answer to this too, if possible.  It *looks*
to me like this is what happens when the client disconnects without a
"quit" due to being disconnected, timing out on their side, etc. but I
am not really sure.

  If so, I think this is another case of 4.x being a little too
verbose, like the "noop is null function" message.  I do know it is
confusing our tech support staff when they try to help figure out a
customer's problem, and go to the POP logs and see I/O errors reported
for this customer.  For now I've been suggesting they just ignore it.

  Would there be a way to detect the case of an unexpected
disconnection, log that, and then ignore the remainder of errors while
trying to flush output?
