I won 82-4. Screenshot for the naysayers :P http://www.podunk.com.au/jeopardy.png
The one I got wrong was a contentious decision - I answered that the parent company of Doritos was Frito-Lay, but the correct answer was PepsiCo (which owns Frito-Lay, which owns the Doritos brand). Watson had Frito-Lay as his second choice but went with PepsiCo. Obviously I "cheated" and used Google and her friend Wikipedia to answer my questions, but I never really had to search all that hard. How much information does Watson have access to? Lots, according to the full article: "Over its three-year life, Watson stored the content of tens of millions of documents, which it now accessed to answer questions about almost anything. (Watson is not connected to the Internet; like all "Jeopardy!" competitors, it knows only what is already in its "brain.")" Clearly, the natural language processing is the tricky AI part, but once you've (and Watson) worked out what the question is asking (to come up with keywords, some of which may not be in the actual question), it really comes down to how much information is at hand - I can safely say I haven't read and memorised tens of millions of documents. An analysis of Watson's thinking shows he would have got 17 questions correct, 3 totally wrong, and passed on 10 (out of which he would have got 3 correct if the confidence was higher, 5 totally wrong if he chose to answer and 2 had the correct answer in his list, but not at the top). This is certainly food for though and would make an interesting AI discussion topic, but I hardly think it's Skynet :-) Regards, -Richard Kelly Stanthorpe SHS Virtual Schooling Service Information Processing and Technology ------------------------------------ Mr Richard Kelly, BA BEd CertIV.A&WT Curriculum Coordinator VSS/IPT/ITS Virtual Schooling IPT iSchool Teacher Maths Teacher Toowoomba District IPT Panel Member NetPAG Committee Member Stanthorpe State High School 2 McGlew St Stanthorpe, 4380 Phone: 07 4681 5824 Fax: 07 4681 5800 Email: [email protected] Web: http://www.stanthorshs.eq.edu.au/vss.htm ------------------------------------ This message (including attachments) is intended for the addressee named above. I started the unit today, and one of my students gave me this link: http://gizmodo.com/5565462/the-magic-of-watson-ibms-question+answering-super computer which is about a team in IBM that has developed a computer program named Watson that can play Jeopardy at a level approaching that of the best human Jeopardy players. Which is a quite amazing feat. This brief article is intriguing, but the link to the original article in the New York Times magazine leads to a much more comprehensive and interesting article. And even better, there is another link that allows you to actually play Jeopardy against Watson. I had a go, and was just beaten (like 20 to -15 Smile emoticon). Great stuff!
