Clearly, the natural language processing is the tricky AI part,
I think there are three aspects. As Richard says above, the natural language processing is a
difficult task for a computer. Richard also noted the second aspect, which is the sheer amount of
information that Watson has to have stored in its 'memory' (as it isn't allowed to search the
Internet whilst playing).
The third aspect is then finding the relevant bits of information in time to beat his opponent.
There is an interesting and I think relevant lecture on YouTube that discusses this. Search Amazon
for "Jeff Hawkins on Artificial Intelligence" to access his lecture, in 5 parts. I haven't viewed
all parts yet.

Another aspect of AI that hit the news recently (like this morning) is the development of an
artificial skin that mimics key properties of real skin. Humans get much of their information about
the world from the 5 senses, so this could be a breakthrough in the sense of 'touch'.
