I actually prefer having to use the Shift to type in a blank letter.  I 
did notice that the letter used was in your rack, Quackle must not have 
registered that you had already "placed" it on the board.  Even if 
Quackle worked the way you wanted it to, you would still need to have 
some way to indicate to use the blank for the first occurrence of a 
letter and the actual letter for the second.  Requiring you to use Shift 
alleviates that problem.
