Hi Eric,
If you fly non-stop you wouldn't transfer. I've flown between Phoenix and Detroit non-stop and on the return flight it stopped in Chicago but I didn't have to transfer because the plane was going on to Phoenix. Of course this was before 9/11! Check for an airline that has a non-stop flight to where you want to go and you should be okay.
