However, I don't think that the terrorists were responsible for the recession. The United States economy was already sliding into recession at the time. The economic importance of the World Trade Center was not as great as the name of the buildings implied. Remember, the estimated Gross Domestic Product of the United States in 2002 was $10.45 Billion and the impact of the bankruptcies that resulted from the 9/11 attacks were of only minor consequence to the overall economy.
