when my son was 8months - 2 years old he would ride in my lap all the time. I would simply put a belt around him to cross all way around behind the back of the chair. it was just in case he slipped over...now he is six and csn just sit there on his own, but gosh he's getting heavy! LOL..he cuts the circulationto my feet off after a while.
