I agree that Clint Eastwood was not the writer, but most directors, especially one with the clout of Eastwood, have the ability to manipulate a script the way they see fit. It may have been written that way originally, or it may have been slightly altered. We will never know. From what I have read, the film is fantastic except for the tragic ending. I personally feel he is an extraordinary director, but I really dislike the man for many of the things he has done over the years. However, there are other directors and actors which I personally do not like, but admit that they are extremely talented and I still enjoy watching them work at their craft. Much like some of the professional athletes which seem equally at home on the court or field, as well as in a jail cell.

just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Gang,
Even if Clint does view the disabled this way, he didn't actually write
the screenplay. This is from the movie's website.
The screenplay is by PAUL HAGGIS, based upon stories from "Rope Burns"
by F.X. Toole.
Granted, Clint could have chosen not to direct this movie, but a friend
that saw it said 95 percent of the movie is really good and has nothing
to do with disabilities. It just takes a tragic turn at the end, which
in many people's opinion, ruins the movie.
