JOIN ADAPT IN WASHINGTON, DC FEBRUARY 26TH MARCH 2nd, 2005
SEND THE NGA A POWERFUL MESSAGE!
The national elections are over and the trend toward states taking on a bigger and more influential role in the design of our long term service and support system will continue. That is why ADAPT travelled to Seattle last summer and why we will be in DC at the end of February for the NGA's Winter conference. No matter what happens in Congress (we won't ignore them) ultimately the effects will be played out at the state level.
The NGA, as the organization representing the individual states, will be the key in getting and keeoing folks out of nursing homes and other institutions.
The NGA will be voting on the ADAPT drafted resolution (see below) on March 1, 2005, at the NGA Winter conference. Governor Rendell, as he committed to do in Seattle, has submitted the resolution to the NGA's Health and Human Services Committee for review and will refer it on to the full NGA for a final vote in DC.
The resolution calls for NGA to support the following:
- MiCASSA
- Money Follows the Person - both the federal legislation and state implementation
- Olmstead implementation - getting/keeping folks out of nursing homes and other institutions
- Opposition to any block granting of Medicaid.
It may be cold in February but over 500 ADAPT activists will be in DC making the NGA accountable. For information:

Thanks Mark. I actually met Gale once at the advocacy meeting I attended. She is disabled herself. I don't know of what though. I didn't ask but it doesn't physically appear to be anything identifiable. She is really nice.

Stacy keep following up with your contact and make sure he does what he says and call ADAPT and let them write a few letters also.
Or e-mail them and tell them what's happening.

I will Dave. I don't want you guys forgetting about me. OK here's the kicker. I tried to get a hold of the woman that handles my county for scheduling rides friday to get a ride for today. I couldn't get a hold of her. One of the drivers lives in my area and had room in her schedule today to take me however, she needed permission from the supervisor. I called early this morning and talked to the woman that works dispatch. She is really nice and asked me to call back in a little while. I did and she was told by her supervisor that I cannot get a ride because I wasn't scheduled. That was it. I called my state rep. in the Senate. I'm sick of this crap. They had room and they turned me away. It would have been extra money for the company. They are supposed to be there to serve the public yet they turn people away when they can fit them in. You would figure since it was their fault I couldn't get a hold of them then they would give me the ride. Oh my God I'm pissed. I tried all day long to get a hold of that girl and on her machine it says that they do not schedule rides through left messages. She is so shitty. She told the driver that I know that I should have left a message but it clearly says on the voice message not to. I guess I am supposed to be able to read minds. When I finally did get a hold of someone, the people that I needed to talk to were gone. I made sure that I told the woman working dispatch to relay a message to her supervisor that I was calling my state rep because my service with them has been horrible. Anyhow I talked to someone in the office, I told him how things have been with the transit and he took my information. He said he'd send it to the right people and he'd get back to me. I hope this goes somewhere because it's ridiculous what I have been going through. I guess my next stop would be ADAPT? I'm pretty much over the bullshit.
Out of curiosity Dave, how much are you charged for those rides?

Hi Stacy,
If you do get a minute any day just stop by 'Chat' and say 'hi". Here in the city of Wichita Falls, the public transportation will go one block off the "City Listed Route' and will not leave the city streets to pick someone up. I live 1/2 block off the City Listed Route so they will stop out front of my place. They will only drop you off in the same way. The American Red Cross has a wheelchair van that I use to get out.

I don't think you all are going to see much of me in there. School has now started back up and I have a pretty hard schedule. I don't know how active I will be with the list either. I had transcript issues and stuck having the earliest classes. I think it will be all I have just to handle the classes. Mon, Wed, and Fri, I have an 8 oclock class and I since I rely on the most unreliable public transportation, I am getting picked up at 6:30 when the school is 40 mins away with the time it takes to tie or lock me down in the bus.
The transit charges double for disabled who require door to door. In the fixed rides that AB's take, the cost of the ride is 2 dollars and an additional dollar if they need to transfer. If they live on an off beaten path more than 3/4 of a mile they can get a ride to the bus stop for an additional dollar. Disabled who require curb to curb service have to pay double what AB's pay. I have curb to curb service and still pay as I live in a rural area and hardly live in a rural area. I'm fighting hard about that as I live a half mile from the highway. That's hardly rural. I then have to pay for transfer points that I don't use because I ride directly. I ride directly there and directly back. Before the tri county govt. took over I was taking a different company for school and only paying 4 dollars no matter what. Now I am paying 6 or more each way. I tried to get a ride for Monday but couldn't get a hold of anyone to schedule it on Friday.
My van is tagged and ready to get the work on the modifications however the man from voc rehab that was supposed to come go over the stuff for the test when I was approved from the DMV is on medical leave and I now have to wait until April to do so. That will make it over a year and a half since I have been working with voc rehab to get my license. The sad thing is that my license from before I got sick is still valid. How much trouble would I get into for using that to go down the street to practice my parking or driving around the neighborhood and practicing my 3pt turns at the dead ends? I'm pretty damn irritated with the whole system. Does anyone else have any problems like this with their public transportation?
