I too have tried Macrobid as a preventative. I keep it on hand - have been for 2 yrs or so. Helps the smell of my urine/catheter when it gets skunky smelling at times but doesn't keep my UTIs at bay.
No side effects from it for me.
I used to irrigate with clorpactin (a chlorine irrigant like clorox!). And renacedin (sp?). But both, I'm told, need to sit in the bladder 5 minutes and I can't hold it. I wasn't getting UTIs then ... just sludge and sand.
I went back to vinegar/sterile water to keep my cath clear. No UTIs then. I best try doing that again with my UTI streak since stopping that daily routine. I stopped because my sludge/ sand decreased or diminished.
Hubby thinks pushing anything into the bladder isn't cool. But I didn't have UTIs then!

I WENT TO UROLOGIST MONDAY AND HE WANTS TO PUT ME ON A HALF DOSE OF MACROBID FOR INFECTION PREVENTION. I OPTED TO WAIT AND SEE IF I GET ANOTHER INFECTION AND I BELIEVE I'M THERE!
ANYONE USE A SOLUTION THAT HAS ANTIBIOTIC IN IT TO FLUSH THEIR BLADDER? IF SO, WHAT IS IT?
ANYONE ON A MAINTENANCE DOSE OF ANTIBIOTIC AND DO YOU SUFFER ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM IT?
