Hey Steph,
Glad to see you making a move towards Freedom, it isn't an easy thing to do from a nursing home, I know because I've done it.
First off you're going to need some help doing this so start calling local ILC's and ADAPT at www.adapt.org and look up your local contact.
They have TBRA(Tenant Based Rental Assistance) programs that have immediate funds to rent a house but you have to find an organization that issues them.   http://www.hud.gov/offices/cpd/affordablehousing/training/abc/activities/tenantassist.cfm

I applaud your bravery in making this decision and I think you're making the right one.
My life has changed so much since I was sprung, hell I mean I have a life!
This list and the people on it gave me lots of support and advice when I was making my
transition and I can't thank  Mr. Lubin enough for starting it.

Hey Everyone,

As you all may or may not know I've been living in a nursing home for 4 years and when I first got on this list many here encouraged me to think about getting out of it. But, at the time, I wasn't ready. Well, call it an itch, call it craziness but I'm longing to be out in the world again but need advice - is it worth attempting? Where should I begin my journey?

I live in rural North Florida near Jacksonville and know that Sec 8 housing there is backlogged, but maybe I can try? I'm not a SCI and don't qualify for the BSCIP programs. Give me pointers, ladies and gentlemen, please? :o)
