Scientists plan China, HK, Taiwan stem cell trial This article is
interesting for two reasons: It describes a coming clinical trial on human
subjects with spinal cord injuries using umbilical cord stem cells. It raises
the question as to why they chose not to use embryonic cells, which are not
restricted by their choice of sites. It is particularly interesting that an
American researcher is involved.
Dear SCAN Members,
We are waiting for the Senate to put the Stem Cell Enhancement bill (S.5) on
the calendar for a vote. As soon as we learn that it is scheduled we, and all
the other pro-cures groups will start sending out frantic messages to their
members, asking them to contact their Senators to ask for their continuing
support, or to plead with the likely "Nay" voters to change their minds.
Does this make sense? Shouldn't we be engaged in a relentless, long-term
campaign to educate and change votes? I guess that that is not the way the
system works. It takes tremendous use of resources, both time and money, to try
to influence a legislator and with a subject as controversial and confused as
embryonic stem cell research, it's not simply a presentation of the facts that
will convince.
We are players in a drama for which the outcome hasn't yet been written. As
the President's popularity continues to fall, imagine what could happen if he
regarded our constituency as a powerful group he'd like to re-engage with.
Imagine if he considered the 100 million patients to be a serious group of
voters that he could not afford to alienate. We've got the numbers, but we
don't have unity and therefore we have little clout where it counts. When I
think that the next President may likely be more supportive of the research, it
still worries me that we are grateful for support when it comes, rather than
being ready to flex our muscles in the marketplace of political power. What do
you think? (Send me an email and I'll post it here next week, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
