----- Original Message ---- From: Lori Michaelson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: t crook <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, August 7, 2007 3:45:56 PM Subject: From Lori_ Syrinx symptoms Mine started with, of all things, chronic and constant abdominal cramping and pain! Then my spasms got worse. Because of all the abdominal problems... I spent four years going to gastroenterologists! I had x-rays done, I had CT scans done and all kinds of tests. All negative. The final straw for me (because I KNEW something was wrong) ... was when my ex-husband lifted me into the front seat of a truck and my right pupil dilated and stayed dilated for quite some time. So I had a CT scan of my head which turned up negative. I had never heard of syringomyelia back then (1990...) but I was so frustrated that I actually called Craig Hospital from my home in New York State to see if they could enlighten me on what the HELL was going on. It is strange, but wonderful, that they will give out medical information on the phone. A neurologist or neurosurgeon told me to have an MRI done and, sure enough, I was diagnosed with a lengthy syrinx and was told the name of my condition. At first I was very scared because I had never heard of it and I wanted relief from my symptoms and my hellacious spasms that were throwing me all over the chair. My surgery was a nightmare. Funny, however, that I had spent so much time, energy and put so much stress on my neck and shoulder muscles just to sit upright in the chair FOR 18 YRS that I had no pain whatsoever in those areas! And also strangely enough... my lower neck pain and my back pain where the shunt is did not cause me any pain until two whole years AFTER my surgeries. I had regular MRIs done but they showed that the shunt was working and the sryinx was collapsed. This secondary condition SUX and is more paralyzing than the paralysis itself. My endurance stinks and nothing touches my pain. I feel like a fragile, porcelain doll. You can pass this along to the list if you would like for others as I still do not think that Comcast users are able to post. I have had abnormal pain in my neck for the last four days. At times my neck has a grinding like sound when I move my head. I don't know if I have something pulled, or some arthritis starting, weather/low pressure- I don't know.... but damn it hurts. I also have diabetes and both of these things cause more and more nerve damage as time goes on. Right now I just take vicodan when I need it and take elavil to help me sleep. Some days or better than others---I guess that is true for us all. Hang in there and best wishes! My Dr. Has checked just about everything and not found anything wrong. What is causing your pain and what do you do to try and control it? Also there is another Gal on here That was finishing a degree in college that also has Transverse Myelitis, I'm sorry but her name slipped my mind right now due to pain and meds, I'm sure others on here can help with her name. One more site called the QUAD LINK had a few listed....one is a nice young girl from Israel who is very interesting..she has a web site that shows her mouth drawn art and much more there. I had to life symptoms(fever, chills, diarrhea, etc.) for about four days, then while sitting at my nephew's wedding reception. I had a terrible pain in my neck and arm and within seconds I couldn't feel my hands and arms and within 10 minutes later, my legs gave out. By the time I reached the hospital, I was totally paralyzed from the neck down. After five sessions of plasmapheresis, I regained some use of my left leg, and a little use of my left arm and hand. I am totally paralyzed on the right side. Who are the other people on the quad list that has Transverse Myelitis? I only know of the one, Cullen. Hang in there until later.
