People who know me have never asked anything like that, but there are tons of people who have said something like, "if you have enough faith you will most assuredly walk again." Now they're questioning my faith. It just galls me and of course probably the worst are those people that do get returned and think it is nothing but determination and hard work. I've seen quite a few of those individuals during my day. My determination and hard work got me as far as I am, but I was lucky enough to be incomplete and able to get my diaphragm back. Hard work, determination, faith, and the diligence of my respiratory staff had a significant impact on my ability to get off the respirator, but I was damn lucky. I have several friends that are still ventilator dependent and I do not judge them.
However, did no one individual who is able to stay off the ventilator for a couple hours at a time without any difficulty. My comment to one of the respiratory staff is he does better off the ventilator would know supplemental air than I did for the first three years after my accident. After I realized how this sounded, I tried to back step, but the technician told me I was not completely wrong in this particular case. Although this was a very unique case. Most people will do anything to get off the ventilator or to walk or to even use their arms and hands again. I sincerely do hope he is able to recover, but if it is so I sincerely hope he does recall how lucky he is. I hope I word that correctly.
