Naomi,
I had the surgery for the suprapubic done more than 12 years ago, but mine
was recommended to me because of the amount of fluid I taken daily. I had
serious problems with UTIs during the first couple of years and then I
learned how to manage it pretty well.

Does SP really eliminate infections? No.

Like any other type of catheter, it requires constant vigilance and even
then you still run the risk of developing an UTI which needs medication.
Prior to last year, I had managed to go more than four years without an
infection which I had contracted, but this does not include the two
infections I managed to get when I had some routine test done at the
hospital. Also I don't include what happened to me about a year and a half
ago. I went more than two years without a cystoscopy and this left me with
a tremendous amount of bladder stones. I kept getting infections over and
over until I had the stones removed in January 07.

Do I still get infections? Yes. I managed to get an infection in early
October 07 and still don't know how I contracted it. Of course, I really
have had some infections which didn't need to be medicated in order to
control. How do I know? I was feeling the symptoms, so I went in and had
blood in urine test done. I rejected the antibiotics until I was really
symptomatic, but thankfully I did not get to the point where my fever shot
up.

Personally I believe some people are more susceptible to UTIs no matter what
they do. Prior to being injured I had three UTIs over year and a half time
period. This is quite a bit for able-bodied individual, but it's pretty
extraordinary for a male.

Well, after writing this book I realized I probably didn't reveal what I
really wanted to say. Simply put, if you have really good care providers
who are willing to follow instructions, you will most likely be able to
reduce some of your infections using an SP, but that is no guarantee you're
going to eliminate them.

Your best bet is to consult your physician and then weigh all of the
positives and negatives. I have heard from many of my female friends that
the bladder augmentation surgery (sorry I don't know the name without
looking it up) is a pretty good solution, but I know there are who can
advise you about that.
Good luck,
Quadius
PS hopefully this is somewhat understandable. I apologize to everyone for
my verboseness.

My whole purpose of getting the catheter is to prevent UTIs. I have them
back to back. Do you self cath or use some type of bag connected to your
catheter?
