After several confrontation with that conversion company regarding the
engineering of their vehicle, poor construction quality, a violating the
Federal
Test Crash requirement, the owner finally submitted a letter of waiver to NHTSA
requesting a waiver on their design and was denied. Some of those vehicles
were repurchased by the owners and used as transporters during the 1996
Olympics in Atlanta. After 30 days of being lease by the Olympic committee,
most
of those vehicles were in sure deplorable condition they could not be
operated safely. Several different leasing companies had titles to those
vehicles
and wasn't aware on how they were used and chose to re-possess them after
finding out where they were located.

Bait & Switch was an understatement. Fraud would have been a better
description of the situation back then. Since Wheelerz was based out of
Glendale and
tried to complete with a couple of other companies in that area like Vantage
and Independent Mobility System and another company who has since gone out
of business after being purchased by a .... candy company.

Wheelerz, continues to operate as a van rental business with Ron and Tammy
as listed owners and operators. I'm sure that you can call them for old parts
and pieces that might be laying around (lol) Was the door opener motor made
from a GM window motor? Not sure.
Did they also use a 3/8 square bar with teeth as a door operator too, back
then?

Oh that exhaust system. Back then I'm sure people thought it was legal too.
Best Wishes

You know my van pretty good. Yes, the side exhaust has melted many rubber
souled shoes. Bait & switch is how I’d describe my Wheeler’s experience.
The four week job became nine months. The door (paid by the VA) has been
repaired like 50 times. They were the only people to claim they easily could
do
the conversion but after a few snags my van was known as the van from hell.
I just tell potential buyers not to order. Get in and out, get a good ride
in and shop around. Take all the advice and comments here and check them
out. It is the dealers job. Unfortunately us disabled auto buyers are stereo

typed with elderly, women, and Hispanics when it comes down to it I’ve been
told.

Ps I think I might be the only owner of a short wheelbase conversion.
