They originated in Greece where drama started a very long time ago. Masks were used in almost every play back then to emphasize the face since the theatres were so big and outdoors some people way in the back might not have been able to see the actors face. Also the mask helped show the characters emotion (there were several emotions but the two most general were happy and sad)
