I am not saying anything in particular about this case, but nowadays all lawyers tell you not to contact the family and offer your condolences or even say you're sorry. This is an admission of guilt and can be used against you in civil cases as well as criminal.
I was indirectly connected with the death of a young girl in my older community and it broke my heart that I could not tell the mother I was sorry about what happened. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was really good friends with the mother and conveyed my aggravation at not being able to say what I thought. We eventually did have a meeting, completely off the record, and it made me feel considerably better. I, however, moved from that community for two primary reasons. One was financial and another was because I had to ride by the scene of the accident every time I left my neighborhood. My heart goes out to you Danny and to her family.
