Greetings Mom & Dad,

Before I start to offer you some suggestions, I will begin with Hello and
Good Wishes to you and your family.
I don't know what happened to your son or which hospital he did his Rehab,
as hospitals will vary in their treatment and rehab. If you haven't been
taught about AD, you will learn from others here who have experienced an
episode
or two and YOU must recognize it ... if it should occur. AD should be taken
seriously.

Regarding bladder management, most MD suggest intermt cath. For THEM, its
the safest protocol.
Every 4-6 hours and never more then 800 cc at a time without a 5 minute hold
and pause. Foleys are easier and take of themselves but expose the bladder
and urethra to infection. The use of a Texas Cath with occassional bladder
thumping works well with some but rarely empties the bladder completely and
allow bacteria to populate more rapidly. WARNING, with Texas Cath and Posey
straps, the outside skin can become infected and pustuas form. But to remove
the
Texas Cath at night for 10-12 hours and allowed to dry using open diapers
and chucks. Superpube's work well like a Foley.

Hope you have a good Uro who is familiar with Quads. If not, medical
doctors will opt'd for the straight cath every 4-6 hours.

Best Wishes
W

My 22 year old son, who became a quad about 6 months ago, has had numerous
issues since initial hospitalization. The most recurring is UTI and some
bladder infections. He was in a hospital and rehab for 3-1/2 months total.
He had a Foley for 2 months initially. After the 2 months, cathing began
every 4 hours. About a month after cathing began he started to urinate
between caths. He complained of the mess and they put a Texas catheter on
him and
still cathed every 4 hours. After about 3 weeks of being at home (I was
cathing and dealing with the Texas catheter) his penis became quite raw.
About 3 times more urine coming out of him was going into the catheter bag as
opposed to cathing. I asked that a foley be put in due to all this. A few
people have told us a super pubic will cause a lot less UTI's and much less
invasive on the body. Please share your views on a super pubic versus a
foley or cathing.

Many thanks for any replies!
