I have taken Propantheline for sweating for 44 years and Ditropan for bladder
spasticity until I had my urinary diversion in 1987. This is what I heard
through the years, although not in as much detail. Quotes from Wikipedia, the
1st source that came up in my search.
1. Propantheline bromide (INN) is an antimuscarinic agent used for the
treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), cramps or spasms of the
stomach, intestines (gut) or bladder, and involuntary urination (enuresis). It
can also be used to control the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and
similar conditions. This agent can also be used for patients who experience
intense GI symptoms while tapering off of TCAs. [1]

[edit]Indications
By relaxing the gut muscle, propantheline can relieve pain in conditions caused
by spasm of the muscle in the gut. Relaxing the smooth muscle in
the bladder prevents the involuntary spasms that can allow leakage of urinefrom
the bladder in the condition known as enuresis (involuntary urination in
adults). Propantheline can also be used to treat excessive sweating because
acetylcholine block also reduces secretions such as sweat and tears.
2. Oxybutynin (Ditropan, Lyrinel XL, Lenditro (South Africa)) is
an anticholinergic medication used to relieve urinary and bladder difficulties,
including frequent urination and inability to control urination (urge
incontinence), bydecreasing muscle spasms of the
bladder.[2] It competitively antagonizes the M1, M2, and M3 subtypes of
the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. It also has direct spasmolytic effects
on bladder smooth muscle as acalcium antagonist and local anesthetic, but at
concentrations far above those used clinically. It is available orally in
generic formulation or as the brand-names Ditropan, Lyrinel XL, or Ditrospam,
as a transdermal patch under the brand name Oxytrol, and as a topical gel under
the brand name Gelnique.
Oxybutynin is also a possible treatment of hyperhidrosis (hyper-active
sweating).

Here's my 2 cents on the comparison......
Ditropan and propantheline are created for the same purpose...to tighten the
sphincter muscle to eliminate urine leakage. I take ditropan/oxybutynin 5mg
2x/day. But, I view propantheline as a 'pain pill for quads' b/c when we have
pain we sweat and this drug stops it. Or at least, minimizes it. I was
introduced to it by another quad around 20 years ago and was amazed at the
difference it made in my daily living. When it was thought that they stopped
making it, I panicked. So, since a few years back, I've stock-piled it and
refill every chance I can. All I know is, that it works for me, my doc
understands, and it helps me from taking a bunch of addictive, mind-altering
pain meds.
Hope this helps...
Lori

Subject: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Propantheline
I have somehow missed the boat on propantheline. This is the first time I have
heard of it. I've been taking ditropan (oxybutynin) for sweating. Does anyone
know how the two compare? Is one better than the other? I need some serious
enlightenment, guys.
