Hello, few weeks ago I got Quadra800 and I'm really having fun. As a former PC user I now consider changing to Mac. Actually, the Q800 is much slower than my PC, but the speed, in this case, doesn't matter. Still, as a happy user of this low-end Mac I have a question to ask. (I have read pickle's F.A.Q and found no right answers so I decided to bother the list's audience, sorry.)
1. Can I upgrade to PPC603 or the only possible upgrade path is to PPC601? (Just curious because I don't expect to find here in CZ suitable upgrade card for any early Mac...) 2. From time to time, when trying to launch Photoshop the Mac says something like "This application requires at least 68020...". Norton Utilities SysInfo says I got a 040. What gives? 3. My Q800 came without CD drive, so I tried to connect one (of course non-Apple). I partially succeed with older Toshiba (manufactured in 1996): SCSI Mounter finds it but no icon is added on desktop, so it's not accesible. I tried using AppleCD5.3.1 and CD Sunrise2.2 and still nothing. Even without those above mentioned drivers, Quadra can see the CD drive but cannot access it. Any idea? 4. When running Duke Nukem 3D, I'm not allowed to change anything in keyboard setup and even after that, in the game my keyboard doesn't seem to work at all (I can press whatever I want and I get no response). Does everyone experience this? My configuration (if anyone bothers): MacOS 7.1, 1MB VRAM (well,I'm not sure...running 800*600 in thousands colors), 56MB RAM, 250MB HDD. That's enough, I guess.
