The PRAM battery usually reads 3.68 volts when brand-new, about 3.6 volts
over most of its lifetime, about 3.2 volts or less when reaching its
economical lifetime, and 3.0 or under is considered dead.

Some machines will work with batteries under 3.0 volts, some won't.
