As Pickle said, it might just be a dead battery, easy and cheap to check,
do this first.

I have 3 LC/Performa 630s in the house, 2 of them with dead power supplies,
the third one has this highpitched tone, whenever it's plugged in (doesn't
need to be turned on, just plugged in) so that one might very well be dying
too.

Not exactly confirm, but as you see, it's a possibility.

Absolutely sure you can't be before you've taken it apart and had a look at
it. The two dead ones I have has simply melted away inside, it's very
obvious once you see it.

Yes, I'd say you can do a replacement yourself. Even though, as you also
mention seen referenced, you'll have to take it complete apart, the 630
case isn't that hard to work with. You'll need a service manual.
