Way to go, Russell. Your willingness to provide "lessons learned" (even
theoretically "painfully-obvious ones") is, IMHO, exercising the strength of
a list-group: to help each other out. Thanks for sharing the results.

P.S. - I tend to regard the bad-cable symptom as important, and NOT a
no-brainer. One of my favorite exercises for my students is to go into the
audio post-producton studio and screw up the MIDI system to quiz them on
trouble-shooting and correction. The most successful stumper hands-down:
to simply reverse the In/Out cables on the controller keyboard - gets'em
(almost) every time! :-)
