Greetings

I would like to add to the theories on suitable OS's for 040's.

No matter what OS you intend to use you should back up all essential
information, low level format and zero the HD. Then proceed with
installing the OS of your choice

0 MB / 5 MB - System 7.1 update 3.0
(System Heap 1.6 MB - 1.8 MB)
this is with or without the use of Ram Doubler

5 MB / 12 MB - System 7.5.3 - (7.5.5 was a PPC only upgrade)
(System Heap 2.4 MB - 3.0MB)
with or without the use of Ram Doubler

12 Mb / 20 MB - System 7.6.1 - (can be made to look like OS 8.1)
(System Heap 4 MB - 5MB)
with or without the use of Ram Doubler

20 MB + - OS 8.1 (can use higher OS parts eg ARA from OS 9.x
(System heap 6.5 MB - 9 MB dependin on what's installed)
20 MB - 36 MB - with or without the use of Ram Doubler
36 MB + without the use of Ram Doubler.

The thing with Ram Doubler depends on how many different applications you
may have open at the same time. Personally over 20 MB i tend to disable
it.

I have been experimenting with a Colour Classic with an 040 upgrade. For
pure speed System 7.1 is unbeatable particularly with 42 MB ram
(physical). The entire System folder fits inside a 7 MB ram disk.

On the other end of the scale is the same CC running OS 8.1 Having lived
with OS 8.1 for the better part of four years or more I will happily
trade some speed for looks and convenience not offered in the previous
systems.

Make of this what you will.

Vincenzo
