JavaScript support in the pre-4.x browsers is buggy at best.

Probably not.  Actually, I think you'll find that a LOT of sites using
JavaScript generate errors, and it's a result of the junky code most have
that works around the differences in JS implementations from browser to
browser.  Not entirely a browser problem and not entirely a coder problem,
but the blame lies with those two.

I very much doubt there's much you can do about it.
